Cottage Critters

A Fox stopped by to visit. He was a character in that he insisted in walking across the clearing right in front of the building. Despite this need, he was very uncertain about us being there and would hesitate a long time at the edge of the clearing before venturing forth Image of fox
He was very cat-like in the way that he expressed his feelings about our presence. We took this to mean that he was displeased with us: Image of fox

Here's an unusual bird! We've seen these hooded mergansers only a couple of times. They are very jumpy, and flee at the slightest movement. We saw this male and female pair on the way into the cottage one spring. They were on a neighbouring lake. We shot these at quite a distance with a video camera while it was snowing. We find the feathers of this owl about the place. Judging from the desbris, it looks like the owl is more than happy to make a feast of mourning dove. Image of owl

This is the closest that we've ever gotten to the wild turkeys. They were right outside the kitchen window. Image of wild turkey Image of wild turkey

The nuthatch is the bird in the upper left corner of this picture. The bird in the lower right corner is a dark-eyed or slate-coloured junco.

The nuthatches are around all year. They have a long, slender bill that is pointed sightly upwards, giving them a slightly commical appearance. The juncos are a migratory bird that pass through our area. We only see them for a few weeks in the spring.
