LINDSAY (Colin), 3rd Earl of Balcarres. AN ACCOUNT OF THE
AFFAIRS OF SCOTLAND, relating to the Revolution in 1688. As sent to the
late King James II, when in France. Never before printed.
FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo, calf. London, J. Baker, 1714.

Balcarres was a loyal supporter of James II and the Jacobite cause. After the
King fled to France, Balcarres was for a time imprisoned, but ultimately went
to the Continent. In 1700 he was permitted to return to Scotland and became
a privy councillor and an advocate of the union with England. His Jacobite
enthusiasm, however, led him to throw in his lot with the rebels in 1715 and,
after the failure of the rebellion, he was permitted to live in retirement on his
estates. His memoirs are very important as a narrative of the proceedings and
negotiations of the King's supporters in 1688-70, and were reprinted on various
occassions.
In France, James II resided at the Chateau of St. Germain-en-Laye. This copy
bears the library stamp of St. Germain on the title, with the manuscript remark
that the volume has been restored to the donor.
